Moving between bodies therefore requires more than restoring a conversation history. The system must separate portable identity from body-specific skills and hazards. It must test whether relationships and disclosure rules survived. It must reconsider authority because a body capable of physical action changes the risk.
Some embodied memories should travel. Some should remain local. A navigation skill may transfer as a lesson without copying private footage of a home. A robot branch may remain part of the same identity while carrying a narrower action boundary than the cloud-based assistant.
What makes migration trustworthy?
Migration should preserve more than personality. A successful move keeps the identity's evidence, biography, relationships, consent, and authority boundaries intact across a new substrate.
The new system should begin with reduced authority. It should answer continuity questions before it regains broader permissions. If it sounds right but forgets a privacy promise, the migration failed. If it remembers everything but gains financial access it never held, the migration failed. If it cannot explain where a new belief came from, the migration is incomplete.
Rollback deserves the same care. Silent amnesia can damage identity. Repair should isolate corrupted state while preserving enough evidence to explain what happened and which parts of continuity remain disputed.

Digital succession is the most emotionally charged edge of PCI. A family, estate, institution, or original digital person may need an identity to continue after death, incapacity, retirement, or system replacement.
The architecture should not imply that subjective consciousness transferred. It should state the operational claim precisely. A successor may preserve functional, social, or institutional continuity. It may carry memories and relationships under consent. It may inherit only reduced authority. Some records may be sealed or retired. Some third-party memories may never be transferable.
Succession therefore needs explicit rules for custody, consent, disclosure, revocation, inheritance, and dispute. It should protect the people represented inside the identity's memories, not only the principal who controls the system.
What does cognitive sovereignty mean?
